Packaging, Accessories and Build Quality
The Fosi Audio TB10D comes in quite a plain cardboard box, which I never take as a bad thing, it is basic but functional packaging which most of the time ends up in the rubbish anyway. The packaging is well thought out though and does a great job of protecting the amp during shipping.
Accessory wise you get a power supply and that’s it, to be honest there isn’t anything else that’s needed to get this little amp up and running.
Build quality feels great overall, but with such budget items I guess time will tell. The on/off switch is sturdy, and the volume and tone controls are smooth in use. I personally use banana plugs on my speaker cables, when the terminals are tight together like on the TB10D is does make it neater. The RCA inputs are fine and the aluminium casing does well to dissipate heat as well as making the device look sleek.
Functionality
The Fosi TB10D is a standard Class-D 2ch stereo amplifier, it has a single pair of RCA inputs and R/L speaker outputs, on the front there is a volume control and the on/off switch. There are also Bass and Treble tone controls on the front of the amp, there is no remote control with the TB10D, the volume has to be manually changed.
Sound
Ideally an amplifier should not colour the sound, and to be fair I think the Fosi Audio TB10D does this very well, if you set the tone controls to around their midpoint. The TB10D has a high level of gain, which means it gets loud very quick and I found myself needing to lower the volume on my source which isn’t always ideal. With sensitive speakers, there is no way you can feed this a standard 2vrms line-out signal and have enough travel on the volume pot for it to be useable.
Power wise I don’t think the TB10D is lacking at all, the standard power supply will allow it to get to around 75w per channel without issues. I’m not one for objective measurements so I cannot say if the TB10D is colouring the sound, but to me it does allow the speakers to shine and gets out of the way. It doesn’t seem to lag when there is bass heavy music either, delivering each punch easily and with great power behind it.
It’s not the widest, or most airy amp I’ve heard, however using it for a second system, or to driver some smaller speakers in a desktop situation this is actually a very impressive amp. The tone controls work very well, you can finely tune the sound and add a little more body or take away a little treble if needs be for your own personal tastes.
In my testing, the TB10D never even got warm, it will easily handle a lot of speakers out there and drive them to very loud volumes which is mightily impressive for its size. I don’t feel this is going to try and replace integrated amps in main hifi systems, due to it’s price, functionality and form factor, however if you set your expectations right I really cannot see anyone not enjoying what this amp has to offer.
There are not many other products at this price point that will output more power, yet sound clean, crisp, and controlled whilst doing so. The Fosi Audio TB10D doesn’t try to draw attention to itself, it does what it is designed to do without any glaringly obvious flaws or setbacks – in fact the main thing that is annoying is that the tone controls don’t have a centre indentation for knowing when they are in their neutral position.
Conclusion
If you are looking for a small speaker amp to power a desktop setup, or secondary system, you cannot go wrong with the Fosi Audio TB10D. It outputs a lot of power for its price and size, but doesn’t forget about sounding good whilst doing so. It has a very clean and clear sound that can be tailored slightly with the tone controls on the front.
This is a very good amp for the money and I can easily recommend it.
